about

As long as I've know Nico Canzoniere, he's kept time with the winds and the snares while dancing as if he was playing them himself, or at least directing them. He's an autodidact, a graduate of the school of sampling with a weirdly irresistible, beautiful final project based on belly–dance rhythms (Çifte telli) to show for it. And if you don't succumb altogether to the magic of his harmonies, you'll be swept off your feet by his straight–of-hand percussion.

With his composition technique, meanwhile, Dario De Nicola has turned himself into an engineer, leaving behind the looping aesthetics that formed him. Still, the Moebius strip of the loop gave him the taste for creation: he doesn't repeat a theme, he puts it mach in the middle of a piece. He tests each sound and each instrument for its potential to enthrall; the loop ceases to turn in circle and goes into orbit.

Out of this constellation was born the legendary 10–inch "Çifte Jazz" in 1998, one hundred percent samples that manage to sound like a well–rehearsed orchestra.

The origins of this first album lie in a phonetic equation: Çifte – shift – ship, The Arkestra has set sail from Zurich, left the archive to go in search of musicians original enough to embark on the journey: copy paste and all aboard! This ark is the place for all those itchy pairs of text down trough the ages, and is the opposite of this week's New New Thing. This is music that sounds like a travelogue, but sill manages to be more of travel than a log. Even the wildest harmonies are born out of the music itself.

That's why the "Origin Theme" has less to say about the actual roots of these musicians than it does about their way of composing: Freeform, but still an Arkestra – however divergent the virtual traces may be, they interact, they sit in the same boat, and they toss unnecessary ballast overboard.
Space is.

Instead of stuffing his ears with wax, Werner Lüdi challenges the Sirens on his baritone and on his alto sax. Sabina Leone's Siren-song, meanwhile, resonates all the wax from Hades to Mount Olympus, Lucas "Steamboat Switzerland" Niggli, meanwhile, steers the ark safely through the "Tyrrhenean Sea", facing down the waves all the while.

"Mitsubachiwo osoreru hanani miwa naranu" (Japanese proverb: Petals that feer the bees will never bear fruit – That was the title of Werner Lüdi's last tour. And we're all feasting from his cornucopia: Freeform live at Vulcaro, Lucendro, Blauer Hirsch, Sunnymoon... Werner Lüdi, a jazz punk of uncompromising tenderness. The Arkestra comes together for a posthumous jam with him, take that became a wake, and a wild one at that.
